Chief Executive Officer and Attorney-in-Fact Phone: 902.809.4672 Email: [email protected] Cheryl joined HOPA as Senior Legal Counsel in 2020, providing claims and risk management services to HOPA’s Subscribers, before assuming the position of Chief Executive Officer and Attorney-in-Fact in 2023. Prior to joining HOPA Cheryl was a managing partner in a prominent Halifax law firm and spent 22 years representing and advising national and international insurers on a wide range of matters, including defence of property and casualty claims, professional liability claims, institutional abuse claims and coverage concerns. Cheryl has extensive governance experience, having served in a volunteer capacity on several Boards and Committees throughout her career. She is currently on the Board of Directors of another Canadian insurance reciprocal (CLIA) and is active in the Canadian Association of Insurance Reciprocals. Matthew Brothers-Moulton, LLB, LLM Claims Counsel Phone: 902.943.8195 Email: [email protected] Matthew provides claims and risk management services to HOPA’s Subscribers. His prior experience as an insurance defence litigator at a regional law firm in Halifax with a primary focus on the defence of professional medical defence claims prepared him well for this role. We also appreciate the experience and perspective he brings from his work as a trained peer mentor and Board Director for Eating Disorders Nova Scotia, his work on equity and diversity with his prior firm and as Chair of the Equity Committee of the Canadian Bar Society – Nova Scotia branch. Brett brings 15 years of industry experience to his role as risk manager, providing risk management support and services to HOPA’s Subscribers. Prior to joining HOPA, Brett was a commercial insurance broker providing insurance and risk management services to many sectors across Nova Scotia. Most recently, he moved to the public sector and was a Risk Analyst in the Nova Scotia government. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Maritime Chapter of The Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS). Ismene Nayagar Claims Examiner Phone: 902.943.8359 Email: [email protected] Ismene joined HOPA in 2024, bringing relevant litigation and claims experience. Ismene has a background as an insurance defence litigator where she primarily defended medical negligence claims in South Africa. Further studies in Insurance Management led her to Ontario where she gained valuable insurance knowledge. She gained experience as a claims examiner at a national healthcare reciprocal handling medical negligence claims and then as a bodily injury adjuster at one of Canada’s largest property and casualty insurers. Ismene holds her Chartered Insurance Professional designation in addition to her law degree. She is passionate about environmental conservation and sustainability. In addition to her work at HOPA Shauna is an active volunteer in her community, having spent many years working with the Apple Blossom Festival and the Children’s Wish Foundation. She also has a proud history of service as a Reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces, where she works with the Canadian Cadet Organization and the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. Susan Beal Human Resource and Financial Administrator Phone: 902.832.8536 Email: sbeal@hopa-advantage.ca Susan joined HOPA as Executive Assistant to the CEO in August 2012 , bringing with her 32 years of prior administrative experience in the legal, financial, and engineering sectors. For the past four years Susan’s extraordinary attention to detail has been directed towards the management of HOPA’s financial records, human resource administration and data analysis. |
